The Lions Municipal Golf Course has been one of the City’s most popular courses for many years. In 1924, the Lions Club opened the first public golf course in the city, Lions Municipal. The group leased part of UT’s Brackenridge Tract and turned it into a nine-hole facility. Later on, the course was expanded to 18 holes. Even after the lease was transferred to the city in 1936, the course kept its original name. Lions have hosted a lot of famous golfers over the years, including Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Sandra Haynie, Tom Kite, and Ben Crenshaw. This track also hosts Texas’ oldest amateur tournament, the Firecracker Open, every year.

Lions were picked by the Texas Golf Hall of Fame and put on the Texas Registry of Historic Golf Courses and is also listed on the Registration of National Historical Places by the National Park Service. This means that it is a very old course that is important to history. It was one of the first courses in the South to let people of all races play together, even before the Supreme Court said it was okay in 1954. While “Muny” has changed a lot over time, it is still a good course that many people in Austin like to play.

The Riverside Golf Course in Austin, Texas, is a public golf course that was opened for play in 1949. The course is an 18-hole, par 72 course that stretches 6,359 yards from the back tees. The Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin, Texas, was built in 1974 by Joe Finger. It is located in Southeast Austin and has 6,918 yards. In 2007, major renovations of 3 holes included a water feature near an island green. In 2015, there were 4 more greens that were renovated. The driving range was also made bigger with new targets and landing areas.

The Jimmy Clay Golf Course became one of a 36-hole complex with the addition of the Roy Kizer Golf Course in 1994. Together, the two courses make up a very good public complex with different types of golf holes in the state.

The Morris Williams Golf Course opened in 1964. It was the third public course in Austin. The designer, Leon Howard, was a very famous course architect. The course has high greens that are shaped like hills, and the land around the course is hilly too.

The golf course is named after Morris Williams Jr., a great golfer from Austin. He won every trophy in the area, including the Texas Jr. Championship and the National Air Force Trophy (which was renamed after him). He died during the Korean War when his jet plane crashed.
